Forts and Monsters

An old utility shed

This is a weekly invitation to write a short piece of fiction (~200 words) based on a photo prompt (above) provided by Alastair Forbes. Click the pic for his site and find more stories you’ll enjoy!

The utility shed held more memories for Tim than a room full of photo albums. He and his brother, Adam, spent hours at a stretch shooting monsters of all sorts with their BB guns. It all depended on what the Creature Feature was on Channel 7 that week. They spent an entire weekend plugging Burt Lancaster’s creatures from the The Island of Dr. Moreau. Each had to take the other’s word for it when they nailed one.

Girls were never allowed in the ‘The Fort’ except for their Mom’s supply line of PB&J sandwiches. They laughed, in their 30s, at the lack of imagination used to name a place that demanded the use of imagination. They used to laugh all the time. Even anger over something silly, like Tim extorting a kiss from Sally Johnson for a tour of The Fort…or Adam showing her the same shed a week later for a higher price, never lasted. It couldn’t.

Brando’s Moreau had created an island of new monsters by the time a real monster came and took Adam…and Sally…and Tim’s niece who had inherited The Fort. Tim allowed the monster one final look around before he pulled the trigger.
